If you've been following us for a while, whether that's through our newsletter or our social media accounts, you might have noticed how much of a fan favorite the Pocket Journal is! Journalers, listers, artists, writers, EDC enthusiasts, and anything else in between, they've all got something nice to say and we appreciate it a lot. Every time we post about this little guy, we always get a lot of love!

But to those who don't have it yet or are new around here and still deciding which gear to get, we know you have questions. This is why in today's gear focus, we shine the spotlight on the Pocket Journal and address the most common ones.

We’ve sorted through the reviews where we can, grabbed some photos which you can also see from the review section itself, so sit back and read on: we've compiled everything you need to know in one place!

Let's start with the biggest question of all: does it fit the Field Notes?

Yes, it does! By far the most asked question about the Pocket Journal, we've made its size the way it is to accommodate other notebooks if you're already set up with one of your own and are looking at adding our Pocket Journal refills into the rotation! For reference, here are some useful dimensions:

  • The Pocket Journal's external dimensions are 4.2” x 6.6” x 0.75” (10.7cm x 16.8cm x 1.9cm).
  • The refill that goes with our Pocket Journal is 3.5" x 5.5" (89mm x 140mm).

Do people really use it as a wallet?

They do! It has space for cards and cash on one side so you can still have your Pocket Journal refill on the right-hand side for when you need to jot down something real quick. And speaking of writing something down...

Do any pens fit?

There's a lot of space on the outer pockets for more than just one pen... but did you know you can also put a pen inside? The small inner pen pocket on the left-hand side can fit the Pokka Pen or Kaweco Lilliput.

How many notebooks can fit inside?

You can fit two of our Pocket Journal refills in it. There are flaps on either side that can accommodate either the front or back covers of our refills so all you have to do is slide them in to secure them. Other people also use it as a passport holder so you can fit one plus a refill, still with room to spare for your cards, cash, and pens on the outer pockets.

Does it fit inside any of your other gear?

Yes, the Pocket Journal fits inside our Venture Pouch and, even then, there's still a lot of room. Interested in the Venture Pouch? We've got a gear focus post on that one too right here. Check it out!

Does it really fit any pocket?

This really depends on the kind of pocket you're talking about. In general, our Pocket Journal is small enough to make it easy and convenient to carry around all while being the size that it is to ensure it can fit your daily carry, whatever those might be: your wallet and the things you'll find in one, your general EDC, or simply your journal, notes, and lists. Like you, we want to be able to carry as much as we can without too much bulk.

I see a lot of feedback that says the Pocket Journal was too tight when people first received it.

This is normal! We sew the Pocket Journal with tight tolerances to reduce bulk and this may sometimes mean there's going to be a little "break-in" period. With use, your own Pocket Journal should loosen up.

Why do some photos show the back pocket with velcro but my Pocket Journal doesn't have it?

This is a recent change we did based on feedback and allows you to put items like your phone more easily in it without worrying about scratches! It makes slipping items in and out a breeze, too.

What other questions do you have about the Pocket Journal?

Are there others that haven't been asked or weren't covered in this post? Let us know in the comments or by clicking on the chat option on the lower left-hand side of any screen on the website! We'd love to answer them for you.
