Hey there, LOCHBY fans! If you've purchased a new product in a color that matches your beloved existing gear but find yourself puzzled by some unexpected shade differences, you’re definitely not alone. Many of our customers have experienced the same thing, and we're here to shed some light (and color!) on this issue.

So, why does this happen? Let’s break it down!

The Wax Factor

The key player in this scenario is wax! When a LOCHBY product is fresh from production, it is coated in a generous layer of wax. This coating not only protects the material but also significantly influences how the color is perceived. The more wax there is, the darker the shade can appear.

This means that while both your new product and your existing LOCHBY items may share the same color—say, a stunning shade of brown—the varying levels of wax can create noticeable differences in appearance.

But fear not! As you start to use your new product, that wax will naturally wear down. Just like that favorite pair of shoes you can’t bear to part with, your new LOCHBY item will gradually lighten over time, developing the beautiful patina we all love. It’s all part of the adventure!

A Visual Example

To illustrate this further, let’s take a look at the fabulous photo by Chris Saenz below, which captures these differences perfectly.

In this image, you can see how the new product showcases a richer, darker brown compared to the well-loved piece.

And if you’re more of a visual learner, be sure to check out Chris’s insightful YouTube video where she compares her new Quattro to her older Field Journal. Spoiler alert: the Quattro rocks a deeper hue!

Customize Your Color Journey

If you prefer a softer, lighter tone, just let time and use do their magic, allowing your item to develop a beautiful, natural fade.

On the other hand, if you love that deeper shade, don’t worry! You can easily maintain a dark, rich color by applying some beeswax to your product. Simply rub a solid wax block directly onto the canvas, and for even better results, use heat to help it absorb more deeply. If you prefer a vegan option, you can substitute beeswax with carnuba wax, candelilla wax, or soy wax.

By understanding how to maintain the color of your waxed canvas products, you can truly appreciate the numerous benefits this material offers.

Benefits of Waxed Canvas

  • Water Resistant: The wax coating repels water, making waxed canvas ideal for outdoor use.

  • Durable: It offers excellent resistance to abrasions and wear, ensuring a long lifespan.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Waxed canvas develops a unique patina over time, giving it character and charm.

  • Easy Maintenance: Spot cleaning is typically all that is needed to care for waxed canvas products.

Overall, waxed canvas is a versatile and functional material beloved by adventurers, artists, and anyone seeking durable gear.

In Conclusion

At LOCHBY, we understand how much our customers appreciate matching colors for their gear, and we want you to be excited about every purchase! Understanding the relationship between wax and color helps unravel the mystery behind those varying shades and transforms any initial disappointment into appreciation for your unique gear journey.

So, the next time you admire your LOCHBY collection, remember: every item tells a story, and each color journey is beautifully unique—just like you!

Do you recommend any beeswax products for the field journals? Just got mine yesterday and loving it. Not decided how to use yet and been looking at what people place in theirs. I live in the uk so maybe if you have uk supplier suggestions for the beeswax would be useful or Amazon? Thanks
